Premier says Canada has supported U.S. war efforts, so don’t snub Alberta oil

EDMONTON – Premier Ed Stelmach says Canada has “protected the backs” of Americans in several wars, and U.S. politicians should consider that before rejecting what some have called dirty oil from Alberta’s oilsands.

Stelmach says Canada and the United States have been together in both world wars and are currently side by side in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

The Alberta premier says that’s the message he’ll take to the annual meeting of western U.S. governors and premiers this weekend in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

The U.S. government is currently drafting a law that could limit American agencies from using oilsands fuels because of the large volume of emissions created in their production.

Big-city mayors in the U.S. also voted this week to urge municipalities to ban the use of such fuel in their vehicles.

But Stelmach cautions that Alberta is a stable supplier to the U.S. and oil delivered by pipeline to American refineries leaves a smaller carbon footprint than foreign oil arriving in “big ships.”
