One suggestion: for a more passive approach, have you considered something like “Walk Against The Tar Sands” (WATTS – something I made up but you can use)? WATTS could be a national (and maybe international) charity / fund raiser that will educate / inform people who aren’t activists at heart, but do want to put an end to the Tar Sands. Or at least exercise better control on them.
It could also be used as a public awareness piece, with the acronym translating loosely to the human and creative development of energy without carbon-based resources (renewables like solar, wind, geothermal, etc).
